Voyage to Mount Washington…Via Rail!

Marshfield Base Station at the Mount Washington Cog Railway

We began the day bright and early, our hotel, the Omni Mount Washington Hotel, had supplied us with a wonderful breakfast to get our energy up for the exciting day ahead! I knew ahead of us we had a jam packed day with visiting the Mount Washington Cog Railway!

Having always been a fan of trains, but seeing a train that goes directly to the top of a mountain was a new one for me! I had done all my research ahead of time, by visiting https://www.thecog.com and preparing myself for the day. What I learned was that I was overthinking it! The most important thing to do on a vacation is to relax and have fun, and that was the mantra of the Mount Washington Cog Railway.

The Drive

Speedily checking out and heading to our Enterprise Rent-A-Car and began driving down the beautiful road, full of fall colors, the likes you have never seen before. Red turns to orange which in turn changes to yellow and all back again. It truly is a view for the eyes.

Base Station Road in Bretton Woods, NH is a beautiful, windy mountain road. There's pull offs along the way with natural waterfalls for everyone to enjoy. Needless to say, our camera was in high use even before the ride itself!

Alas, the main event appears before our eyes, a jewel in the mountain range. Marshfield Base Station is the starting point of any Mount Washington Cog Railway adventure, including a Gift Shop, Museum, Restaurant and of course the stars themselves, the Biodiesel locomotives!

We boarded our train and away we went to the summit of Mount Washington! Beautiful views greeted us at the summit, and we took plenty of pictures to share!

Our next stop was the Summit of Mount Washington. Up top we were greeted with beautiful 360 degree views and also some surprising things!

For one, there is a REAL USPS Post Office on top of the mountain! How cool is that? Second, there was also a Weather Observatory Station and plenty of Gift Shops to take home a souvenir from your amazing trip. Needless to say, a hour was just enough time to do all we wanted to do...and leave us with a reason to come back again! 🙂

I have been atop Mt. Washington 2X , once as a young child with my parents in the 60′ and again in 2014. Both trips were steam powered which in my view is the only way to travel back in time. The sounds and smells of burning coal and oil is just the perfect day outside in New England. While the diessel may be quicker and quieter the experience of steam is for the memories.

This is a good point! The steam does bring that old style majestic charm of early traveling and fun. Thanks for the comment!

I live inHelen’s, Montana and will be traveling to New England.

August 20th is the only day my high school friend can join me to take the COG Railroad. We would prefer taking the nostalgic STEAM experience.

What times does the STEAM engine depart on August 20th?,

      Hey Nancy!
